[Class 15 (ii)] [Also in Groups V, III and VIII] Coatings are produced on fibrous materials such as yarns, fabrics, felts or spun glass from an aqueous suspension of a colloidal, crystalline, inorganic silicate or hydrous oxide consisting substantially of particles of colloidal dimensions, i.e. not larger than 1 micron in diameter, which contains structural water, is capable of swelling when brought into contact with water to form a plastic hydrogel and exhibits base exchange properties. The suspension may be applied directly to the fibrous materials or it may first. be allowed or caused to gel and then dried. Suitable silicates are aluminium or magnesium silicate, particularly bentonite. Other materials include Halloysite, Gibbsite and vanadium pentoxide. Impurities or particles larger than 1 micron in diameter are removed by settling in water or centrifuging. The coatings may be rendered insoluble in water by heating to 600‹ C. or higher. A finely-divided fibrous, powdered or flaked material, pigment, dye or filament may be mixed with the sol or gel or applied to the gel before it has dried,' e.g. metal powders or flakes. The coatings may be made waterresistant by treatment with solutions of potassium hydroxide, mercurous nitrate, calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, manganese, cobalt and lead chlorides, magnesium, cobalt and copper nitrates, zinc, manganese, nickel and copper sulphates, metal acetates, colloidal iron oxide and colloidal alumina, and trimethylbenzyl ammonium hydroxide. The flexibility may be increased by treatment with ethylene glycol mono-ethyl (or methyl or butyl) ether, methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, hydroxyethyl or methylhydroxyetbyl acetate, ethylene or propylene glycol, methylisobutylketone, di-isobutylketone and butyl carbitol. Examples are given of the production of compositions containing bentonite and paper pulp, aqueous wax emulsion, asphalt, rosin, nitrocellulose, aluminium powder, copper powder, ground mica flake, asbestos pulp, finelydivided rock wool, titanium oxide pigment, lithopone and carbon black.
