PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper-sheet kind identification device capable of determining whether a light emission quantity is adjusted, by using a reference sheet and immediately finding the reference sheet left forgotten to be arranged. SOLUTION: The paper-sheet kind identification device includes a light-emission quantity adjusting means 36 for adjusting the light emission quantity of a light guide device 34 within a predetermined range; a signal read means 37 for reading signals outputted from a reflection type photosensor 33; a signal storage means 42 for storing adjusted output signals read by the signal read means 37; a level comparison means 41 for comparing an output signal level related to first read information within the width direction range of paper currency, with an output signal level related to second read information from the outside part exceeding the width direction range, on the basis of the output signal level stored in the output signal storage means 42; and a control part 39 for comparing the output signal level stored in the signal storage means 42 by the level comparison means 41 and determining the quality of adjustment, on the basis of the comparison result.
