<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently measure a shaft diameter of an engine valve. <P>SOLUTION: A shaft diameter measuring apparatus 20 has a stopper 74 for intercepting an engine valve 10 transferred in erected posture to stop the progress of the engine valve 10. The engine valve 10 stopped by the stopper 74 is pressed to a positioning plate 86 advanced under the action of a pressing cylinder 34. Thereby, a shank 12 of the engine valve 10 is abutted on a first fixed probe 26 and a second fixed probe 28. Further, a first movable probe 30 and a second movable probe 32 are respectively approached to the first and second fixed probes 26, 28, so that the shank 12 is held between the first fixed probe 26 and the first movable probe 30 and between the second fixed probe 28 and the second movable probe 32. By calculating a distance between the first fixed probe 26 and the first movable probe 30 and a distance between the second fixed probe 28 and the second movable probe 32, the shaft diameter is measured.
