<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a transition into a sleep state under a condition where a power saving effect is not obtained. <P>SOLUTION: In an image forming apparatus, the occurrence of a sleep state release event is monitored, when the release event occurs (S1201:YES), an identifier of the release event and the release start time of the release event are stored, when the apparatus itself is in a standby state, the time of the transition into the sleep state has come, and the release event whose release start time is after the transition time is stored, a power amount required for maintaining the standby state in a period from the transition start time of a transition event to the release start time which first comes and is after the transition time is calculated as a power-saving amount, that is, an amount capable of saving power in the period, and when the transition into the sleep state is performed and then, it is decided that the sleep state is released at the release start time, a return power amount required for a return from the sleep state to the standby state is calculated (S1203 and S1204).
