<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical alignment liquid crystal element including positive liquid crystal with a short electric-optical response time that satisfies typically required characteristics such as a voltage holding ratio and light resistance. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element includes a pair of substrates disposed to face each other, a liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates, a pair of liquid crystal alignment films each disposed on each surface of the liquid crystal layer, and an electrode for horizontal electric field generation provided for at least one of the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal layer includes positive liquid crystal.
