<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give an image of a proper steering quantity regardless of a vehicle speed to a driver, even when changing the steering gear ratio in response to the vehicle speed. <P>SOLUTION: The steering gear ratio G and a steered angle δ are calculated based on the vehicle speed V (Step S1 and S2), steering reaction T is also arithmetically operated from the sum of a steering reaction component T(V, θ) corresponding to the vehicle speed V and a steering angle θ, a friction component Tf and a steering reaction component T(θ') corresponding to steering angular velocity θ' (Step S3-S8), and the steering reaction component T(V, θ) is set in a characteristic of becoming a small value as the vehicle speed V becomes large. Since the steering reaction T is restrained as the vehicle speed V becomes large, even when the steering gear ratio is set in a characteristic of becoming large in the steering gear ratio in response to the vehicle speed, the steering reaction imparted to a steering wheel 1 becomes an almost equal degree regardless of the vehicle speed.
