The method involves transferring structuring elements (11) of a structuring roller on a workpiece surface under simultaneous transformative smoothing, where the structuring elements are provided in connection with a toroidal outer contour (10) e.g. parabolic outer contour, of the structuring roller. A surface roughness of the structuring elements is reduced. The structuring roller is rolled on the workpiece surface in pressure at the workpiece surface. A translational feed motion is simultaneously performed relative to the workpiece surface. An independent claim is also included for a rolling tool.
