Provided are: a method for producing a composite material which is formed of a plurality of metal materials that are different from each other, said method capable of stably producing uniform coating films; and a composite material which is produced by this production method. This method for producing a composite material comprises a coating film formation step (S3) wherein a coating film is formed by accelerating composite particles together with a gas and spraying and depositing the composite particles on the surface of a base, while maintaining at least the surfaces of the composite particles in a solid state, each of said composite particles having a core material covering layer that is formed of a first metal or alloy and a covering layer that is formed by coating the core material covering layer with a second metal or alloy that is less reactive than the first metal or alloy, with the covering layer serving as the outermost layer.
