-21 --- A sugar mill roller having hardfacing applied thereto and a method of providing same is disclosed wherein a plurality of 5 circumferentially running, axially spaced and substantially parallel ridges are machined on the body of the roller such that each ridge includes one or more land portions, and on each ridge, a composite hardfacing comprising a mild steel matrix supporting therein a particulate wear resistant 0 material is applied to the or each land a plurality of layers of weld. Each layer of weld is formed by providing a molten weld pool formed for receiving the particulate wear resistant material which is impinged into the weld pool and allowing the weld pool to solidify with the wear resistant material 5 supported therein.
