PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a spherical silica-based mesoporous body, which enables to sufficiently enlarge pore diameter under an acidic condition, to make pore size uniformity of all obtained particles sufficiently high, and to efficiently and reliably obtain a spherical silica-based mesoporous body having a sufficiently high degree of monodispersity and a sufficiently large pore diameter. SOLUTION: A silica raw material is mixed in a basic solvent with a surfactant comprising an alkylammonium halide represented by the general formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>may be the same or different and denote 1-3C alkyl; X denotes halogen; and n denotes an integer of 7-25) to form silica-based porous body precursor particles in which the surfactant is introduced into silica. The surfactant contained in the porous body precursor particles is removed and the pores in the particles are enlarged by heating in an acidic solution to obtain the objective spherical silica-based mesoporous body.
