The present invention relates to surfactant compounds of formula (I): R (OB)p (OP)m (OE)n CH (SO3M) - COOR', where R is an alkyl or alkylaryl radical having a C3-C30 alkyl chain or a mixture of said radicals; R' is an alkyl or alkylaryl radical having a C1-C30 alkyl chain, a - [(CH2)xO]y-Z radical, where x is an integer from 1-20, y is an integer from 1-75, and Z is H or a C1-C5 alkyl radical, or a -(OmicronEpsilon)n' (OP)m' (OmicronBeta)p' R" radical, where n' is an integer from 1-75, m' is an integer from 1-75, p' is an integer from 0-75, and R" is an alkyl or alkylaryl radical having a C1-C30 alkyl chain, a - [(CH2)x'O]y-Z' radical, where x' is an integer from 1-20, y' is an integer from 1-75, and Z' is H, or a C1-C5 alkyl radical; m is an integer from 1-75; n is an integer from 1-75; p is an integer from 0-75; and M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation or a bivalent alkaline earth metal half-cation or an onium ion. The invention further relates to a method for preparing said compounds and to aqueous surfactant compositions comprising one or more of said compounds, in particular a distribution of said compounds. The invention also relates to the use of said compounds and composition for the assisted recovery of hydrocarbons.
