The invention relates to a method for characterizing the hydric properties of a material sample including a first and second surface comprising: for predetermined environmental conditions, supplying only the first surface of the sample with an aqueous phase according to a predetermined supply profile, and measuring a time profile of the flux density of water vapor emanating only from the second surface of the sample; and determining from said time profile the hydric characteristics of the sample.
