[Problem] To provide an electrode for nonaqueous-electrolyte batteries having a long service life. [Solution] The electrode for batteries of an embodiment is an electrode which comprises a current collector and, disposed on the current collector, a mix layer comprising: a carbonaceous substance; an active material comprising a composite that comprises a carbonaceous substance and a metal contained therein; and a binder. The electrode is characterized in that the active material, when analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, gives peaks in which 18 mol% or more of the C1s peaks are accounted for by the peak assigned to CH2.
