PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a composite material capable of impregnating inexpensively silicon into a boron carbide preform, and preventing generation of a crack during impregnation of silicon.SOLUTION: This method for producing a composite material comprising a reinforcement of boron carbide 10 and a matrix of metal silicon includes processes for: making a preform formed by coating a particle surface of boron carbide 10 with a carbon component 20; and impregnating metal silicon into the made preform. Hereby, the particle surface of boron carbide 10 in the preform is coated with the carbon component 20, and boron carbide 10 can be prevented from being brought into direct contact with silicon during impregnation of metal silicon. Further, since the carbon component 20 whose surface is coated is reacted with silicon into silicon carbide 30, the particle surface of boron carbide 10 is coated with silicon carbide 30, to thereby protect the particle of boron carbide 10. |
