<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sulfur-based carbon material useful in manufacturing a secondary battery having a large energy density and a satisfactory cycle characteristics.SOLUTION: An organic sulfur compound is obtained by a reaction of a halogenated aromatic compound expressed by the following general formula (1) and sulfur. The ratio of the amount (wt.%) of sulfur intercalated in the organic sulfur compound to the total sulfur amount (wt.%) in the organic sulfur compound is less than 0.75. [Ar represents an aromatic carbon hydride; X represents a halogen element, which is either Br or I; n represents a natural number of 2 or larger.]</p>
