<p>A method of operating a fuel injector (160, fig.1) of an internal combustion engine, wherein the fuel injector is driven by an energizing current profile for an energizing time interval (ET), the method comprising; Selecting, for each injection of a sequence of injections, an energizing current profile from a plurality of predetermined current profiles, the energizing current profile being a function of an engine combustion mode. Also determining, for each selected current profile, a corresponding energizing time as a function of a common rail pressure value (Rail press) and a fuel quantity value (Inj.Qnty). The selected energizing current profile of the pilot, post, after or boot injection may therefore have a peak current profile, a bypass current value, a hold current value or time interval that is not equal to that of the main injection. So a split main injection M1 may use current profile Prof1, main injection M may use standard current profile Prof std, and an after injection may use current profile Prof 2.</p> |
