The present invention provides a portable terminal (100) automatically switching to a manner mode without manipulation of a user in the case that the portable terminal is positioned within a predetermined zone and a method for automatically switching operation modes of the portable terminal. The portable terminal according to an aspect of the present invention may comprise a display unit outputting a screen; an interface unit receiving an input for controlling the screen output by the display unit; a communication unit receiving a message transmitted to the portable terminal and a call connected to the portable terminal; and a control unit determining the position of the portable terminal and switching to a manner mode as an operation mode of the portable terminal even without user input in the case that the portable terminal is positioned within the predetermined zone.
