The water from the aquarium (28) is siphoned through a siphon pipe (20) into a filter column (29) via four holes (21) in the pipe. The water flows through a "dry" filter grid (22) which is exposed to air and drops down the column to a "wet" filter grid (22A) at the bottom. Water passing through the lower filter gives buoyancy to a float (25). The float forces up a piston (24), which closes off the four holes in the pipe. The filtered water is pumped at a constant rate back to the aquarium. The float drops, uncovering the holes and the filtering process starts again.
