The present invention relates to an apparatus for recognizing a hand motion and a method thereof. The apparatus for recognizing a hand motion according to the present invention includes: a sound analyzing unit which analyzes a sound sensed from a sound sensor; a motion recognizing unit which analyzes a motion and a vibration of a user sensed from a motion sensor; a database which stores sound, motion, and vibration values corresponding to various hand motions of the user; a hand motion recognizing unit which recognizes the hand motion of the user from the database by using the analyzed sound, motion, and vibration; and a control unit which generates a control signal corresponding to the recognized hand motion. Thus, the present invention can increase the accuracy of the motion by using the hand motion and an additional sound and also make more various input patterns in an interface apparatus according to the existence of sounds and the number of the occurrence of the sounds than by using only the hand motion.
