A printing apparatus capable of shifting a power state to a second power state where power consumption is lower than a first power state, the printing apparatus comprising: a detection unit configured to detect a heat source approaching the printing apparatus in an area divided into a predetermined number of areas for each passage of a predetermined period of time; a first calculation unit configured to calculate an average temperature of respective areas including representative points specified from the predetermined number of divided areas detected by the detection unit; a specifying unit configured to specify a current position of the heat source based on the average temperature of the respective areas calculated by the first calculation unit; a second calculation unit configured to calculate a distance between the current position specified by the specifying unit and a predetermined reference point; a first determination unit configured to determine whether the heat source is moving to pass by the printing apparatus based on a change of the current position specified by the specifying unit; a second determination unit configured to determine whether the heat source is approaching the printing apparatus based on a change of the distance calculated by the second calculation unit; and a power control unit configured to shift, in a case where the second determination unit determines that the heat source is approaching the printing apparatus, the power state of the printing apparatus from the second power state to the first power state step by step according to the distance calculated by the second calculation unit.
