PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for video decoding using a data unit of a variable hierarchical structure.SOLUTION: The video coding method includes the steps of: acquiring, from a bit stream, maximum division number information for intra-mode and information on a prediction mode of a coding unit; determining a maximum division level of a conversion unit determined from the coding unit, using the maximum division number information for intra-mode, when the information on the prediction mode indicates intra-mode; acquiring from the bit stream sub-division information for the present conversion unit, if the present division level of the present conversion unit is smaller than the maximum division level of the conversion unit; and diving the present conversion unit by the conversion unit of the next division level, when the sub-division information indicates the division of the present conversion unit. The next division level is larger than the present division level, and the size of the conversion unit of the next division level is smaller than the size of the present conversion unit. |
