The engine (1) has a discharge pipe (4) for exhaust gases. An exhaust gas recirculation pipe (6) stays in flow connection with the discharge pipe and guides a part of the gases into an air diffuser pipe (8). A pair of exhaust-gas turbocharger devices (22, 24) is arranged in series with respect to a delivery pipe (32) for charge air. A third exhaust-gas turbocharger device (26) is arranged parallel to one of the two turbocharger devices and in series to the other turbocharger device for charge air. The former and the third devices are connectable and disconnectable independent of each other. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine. |
