The accumulator further includes a plurality of shape memory alloy wires configured to cause the axial movement of the piston within the first cylinder.

A system, comprising: an accumulator configured to store hydraulic fluid to operate subsea equipment, wherein the accumulator comprises: a first cylinder configured to receive a fluid within an internal volume of the first cylinder;a piston configured to move axially within the first cylinder, wherein axial movement of the piston within the first cylinder adjusts the internal volume of the first cylinder;a rod extending axially from the piston;a first end cap disposed at a first axial end of the accumulator, wherein the first end cap is connected to the rod;a second end cap disposed at a second axial end of the accumulator, wherein the second end cap is connected to the first cylinder;a plurality of shape memory alloy wires extending from the first end cap to the second end cap, wherein the plurality of shape memory alloy wires are configured to cause the axial movement of the piston within the first cylinder; anda controller configured to adjust an amount of electrical current through the plurality of shape memory alloy wires based at least in part on a measurement sensed by a sensor.
