A star polymer produced by a process comprising: converting (i) a central compound having at least three functional groups X, (ii) an arylene compound having two functional groups Y, and (iii) a terminal group compound having a functional group Z, wherein the functional groups X of the central compound each react with a functional group Y of the arylene compound and form a covalent bond, wherein the functional group Z of the terminal group compound reacts with a functional group Y of the arylene compound and forms a covalent bond, and wherein the terminal group compound is used in a stoichiometric quantity which corresponds essentially to the stoichiometric quantity of the functional groups X of the central compound; wherein the conversion is catalyzed by one of platinum, palladium, or nickel, and wherein the stoichiometric ratio of the terminal group compound to the arylene compound is between 1:10 and 1:360.
