According to one embodiment, a method comprises an operation of identifying a plurality of network devices, and detecting a presence of firewall processing functionality in a subset of the network devices. At least one of the network devices not in the firewall subset is configured to forward packets to a network device of the subset for firewall processing.

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, causes performance of operations comprising:
detecting presence or absence of a particular packet processing functionality in each of a plurality of network devices; determining a first subset of the plurality of network devices that have the particular packet processing functionality from the plurality of network devices for which the presence or absence of the particular packet processing functionality has been detected; determining a second subset of the plurality of network devices that do not have the particular packet processing functionality from the plurality of network devices for which the presence or absence of the particular packet processing functionality has been detected; configuring at least one of the second subset of network devices to forward packets to at least one of the first subset of network devices when the particular packet processing is required for the processing of packets.
