PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having excellent durability, a protection material for an organic EL element, and a method of manufacturing the organic EL element.SOLUTION: Disclosed is an organic electroluminescent element in which an organic light-emitting layer 2 is formed on a transparent base material 1 and which is obtained by cutting off an organic electroluminescent element intermediate 10 formed by laminating a sealing material 5 so as to cover the organic light-emitting layer 2 formed on the transparent base material 1 from the side of the sealing material 5. Grooves 6 are formed on the surface of the sealing material 5 constituting the organic electroluminescent element intermediate 10 and on the side opposite to the side of the organic light-emitting layer 2.
