Disclosed are a portable electronic apparatus capable of a side touch input and a controlling method thereof. The portable electronic apparatus includes: a touch screen disposed on the front of the portable electronic apparatus; one or more sensor pads disposed on one side of the portable electronic apparatus and formed to detect a user input; and a control unit formed to execute an application related to at least one sensor pad among the sensor pads on the touch screen, output an indicator corresponding to the sensor pad related to the application on the touch screen, and execute a designated function of the application in response to the user input when the user input is detected on the sensor pad related to the application. The sensor pad at a certain location can drive a shutter function of a camera application.
