Heat engine

The engine has a piston (1) that is movable to and fro in a cylinder (2). An operating medium that is inserted into a cylinder area (9) under pressure performs mechanical expansion task by the piston. A variation unit is arranged for variation of the cylinder area volume and/or for variation of opening duration of an inlet valve (4), where the cylinder area volume is provided for the operating medium during closing of the inlet valve. The inlet valve comprises an actuation element (12) that is movable directly by the piston and is provided axially in the cylinder area.
