The disclosure relates to a method for preparing a compound of formula (2) through a coupling reaction followed by a cyclisation reaction using compounds (4) and (5). This compound has a chiral centre and a piperidine with an oxo group bound to it and is used as an intermediate in the preparation of a compound which exhibits good inhibitory activity against dipeptidyl peptidase IV enzyme and may be used to treat diseases including diabetes (particularly type II diabetes) and obesity. The disclosure also relates to methods for preparing the compound of formula (4) and (5).
