Cassette configurations to support platters having different diameters

A material handling apparatus adapted to support a plurality of disc-shaped platters, such as but not limited to a cassette assembly adapted to support data recording media or substrates during manufacturing. In some embodiments, a cassette assembly includes a base cassette with a base and opposing sidewalls configured to support an outermost perimeter of each of a first plurality of disc-shaped platters having a first diameter. An insert contactingly engages the base cassette. The insert has a plurality of spaced apart grooves to contactingly support an outermost perimeter of each of a second plurality of disc-shaped platters having a different, second diameter.

1. A cassette assembly adapted to store disc-shaped platters, the cassette assembly comprising:
a base cassette having a base and opposing first and second sidewalls configured to support an outermost perimeter of each of a first plurality of disc-shaped platters having a first diameter, the first plurality of disc-shaped platters comprising substrates of magnetic data recording discs, the first and second sidewalls separated by a first separation distance therebetween; and an insert placed within the base cassette between the first and second sidewalls, the insert characterized as a cassette adapter comprising opposing third and fourth sidewalls and at least one intervening support member connected to the respective third and fourth sidewalls to maintain the third and fourth sidewalls at a fixed separation distance therebetween greater than the first separation distance, each of the third and fourth sidewalls having a plurality of spaced apart grooves to contactingly support an outermost perimeter of each of a second plurality of disc-shaped platters having a different, second diameter greater than the first diameter, the second plurality of disc-shaped platters comprising substrates of magnetic data recording discs.
