The present invention provides for use of an effective amount of a molasses extract enriched in polyphenols in the preparation of a medicament for altering the distribution of body mass by decreasing overall percentage of fat, increasing the proportion of lean mass to fat mass or both decreasing overall percentage of fat and increasing the proportion of lean mass to fat mass, in a subject in need thereof.
