PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a reduction in visibility of projection images when the intensity of internal light has been changed.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal projector 1 includes: a lamp 10; an image processing engine 20; liquid crystal panels 32a to 32c that modulate light from the lamp according to an image signal created by the image processing engine; an internal light intensity sensor 50 that measures the intensity of the light from the lamp having transmitted through the liquid crystal panels; and a light intensity control circuit 60 that adjusts at least one of the intensity of light from the lamp and the brightness of an image created by the image processing engine so that a result of measurement by the internal light intensity sensor becomes a target value.
