[Class 106 (iii)] A device for directly detecting, measuring and utilizing for control purposes, variations in angular velocity, comprises means for resolving the controlling motion into two components, one being directly proportional to the controlling motion and the other, by means of an arrangement utilizing the inertia of a mass and an interposed resilient system, being displaced in time relative to the first component whereby the difference between the two motions gives a measure of any change in velocity. In the described embodiment the controlling motion is imposed on a shaft 1 carrying a lever 2 having arms of equal length. One arm is linked by a member 8 to one arm of a similar lever 6 pivoted at the end 5 of a control lever 4, while the other arm of the lever 2 is pivoted to a forked link 11 connected to a delaying or damping device. One branch of the fork 11 is pivoted at 12 to one end of a duplex lever 13, the other end of which is linked to the second arm of the lever 6. The second branch of the fork 11 carries a horizontal bar 25 engaged, above and below, by buffers 26<SP>1</SP>, 26 carried in brackets which are secured to a sector arm 20 pivoted about a point 16. The sector 20 drives, through a train of gears, a fly 23 which offers considerable inertia to changes in velocity of the sector 20. Thus, when the lever 2 and fork 11 move with uniform velocity, the duplex lever 13 moves uniformly upwards and the lever 6 turns about its pivot 5 which remains stationary. During accelerations of the lever 2 and fork 11, however, the resistance offered by the fly 23 is transmitted through one or the other of the resilient buffers 26<SP>1</SP>, 26, delaying movement of the end 17 of the duplex lever 13 and causing displacement of the pivot 5 of lever 6 and, therefore, operation of the control lever 4 (see Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown). |
