Disclosed are a method and apparatus for starting an application for use in an electronic device, said method comprising: receive a sliding operation command targeting the icon of the application to be started; when the sliding operation command targeting the icon of the application to be started fulfils a first preset condition, provide memory resources for the application to be started; and when the sliding operation command targeting the icon of the application to be started fulfils a second preset condition, start the application to be started. The probability of false start-ups is reduced, and application start-up speed and user experienced are improved.
