Systems and methods enable a plurality of modems in a microwave network receive a plurality of frames from a previous one of the plurality of modems and detect an error frame within the plurality of frames. The plurality of modems can be further configured to send a retransmission request to the previous modem upon detection of the error frame and transmit a dummy frame in place of the error frame to a next one of the plurality of modems.

1. A modem configured to operate as a repeater in a communications link having
a plurality of modems, the modem comprising: a processor; a memory to store a plurality of frames, wherein the frames include data frames and dummy frames that are dispersed among the data frames; a transceiver configured to communicate with a subsequent modem of the plurality of modems in a scheduled manner according to the processor, wherein the processor is configured to:
detect a retransmission request for a first data frame that was previously transmitted to the subsequent modem of the plurality of modems;retransmit the first data frame to the subsequent modem using the transceiver, in replacement of a second data frame of the plurality of data frames that was scheduled next for transmission;transmit the second data frame using the transceiver after transmission of the first data frame; andtransmit a third data frame in replacement of a first dummy frame that is scheduled for transmission after the second data frame.
