Boards, plates, slabs and tiles are produced by incorporating dissolved blood albumen into a mass of coarsely-disintegrated wood in the absence of an inorganic binder so as to produce a body of moist but not fluid disintegrated wood, shaping the moist mass into board form, heating the shaped body under pressure in contact with heated press members to a temperature sufficiently high to bring about evaporation of water and maintaining the pressure until a dry board has been formed. The blood may be obtained from animals, fish, whales or seals and may be in the form of natural blood or of redissolved dried blood. In addition peat, bark, chopped straw, wood pulp, coke, coal powder, grass and leaves and up to 1 per cent sulphur may be added to the mix. In a typical example 720 grams of blood powder in five times its weight of water is added to 100 litres of chips and after pressing at 10 kgs. per cm.2 and drying, a board 7 mms. thick and a meter square can be produced. Specifications 541,944 and 542,966 are referred to.
