[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a battery charging system of the type comprising switching means responsive to battery voltage to cause reduction in the charging current when the battery voltage reaches a predetermined value and to interrupt later the charging current when the battery voltage reaches a predetermined higher value. The switching means is responsive to thermally deformable means, (see Group XXXVII), and comprises a heater g connected across the battery a, and a bi-metallic strip actuating in turn through suitable mechanism contact e which either removes a short circuit or a second resistance d<SP>1</SP> (or inductance) from across resistance d (or inductance), and contact f which opens the charging circuit. The contacts are reset manually and the operating value of the device may be adjusted by a variable resistance h included in the heater circuit. The operating spindle of the resistance h may carry an index pointer cooperating with a scale indicating the setting according to the number of cells to be charged. The thermally deformable means may also actuate an index pointer showing the state of charge. Further charging resistances may be brought into service successively by additional switches. |
