A method of controlling a temperature control system, which operates in two modes: a continuous mode and a pulse width modulation (PWM) mode. The mode is set based on a variable threshold error and the temperature offset, wherein the variable threshold error is based on the rate of change in temperature of the system and the temperature offset is between the measured temperature and target temperature of the system. Preferably the temperature control system operates in the continuous mode if the temperature offset exceeds the variable threshold error. The temperature control system may turn off when the temperature offset is below a predefined minimum offset. Multiple data points may be used to determine the rate of change in temperature and a low pass filter may be applied to the data set. There may be a plurality of pulse width modulation patterns of which one may be selected depending on the temperature offset.
