The invention provides for methods for the production of mevalonate, isoprene, isoprenoid precursor molecules, and/or isoprenoids in cells via the heterologous expression of phosphoketolase enzymes.

Recombinant cells capable of producing of isoprene, wherein the cells comprise one or more heterologous nucleic acids encoding a polypeptide having phosphoketolase activity and (i) one or more nucleic acids encoding one or more polypeptides of the complete MVA pathway and (ii) a heterologous nucleic acid encoding an isoprene synthase polypeptide, wherein culturing of said recombinant cells in a suitable media provides for the production of isoprene.
