A negative electrode material for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, having negative electrode active material particles and characterized by: the negative electrode active material particles having a silicon compound indicated by SiOx (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1.6); the silicon compound including a Li compound therein; and the negative electrode material for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries including at least one among a group 1 and a group 2 metal ion and a substitutable ammonium ion. As a result, a negative electrode material for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries is provided that is capable of increasing battery capacity and improving cycle characteristics and initial battery efficiency.
