A degree of water repellency is imparted to a water-soluble solid material, e.g. salt, ammonium nitrate, fertilizers, by exposing the material for 1-15 mins. to the vapours of a vaporizable organo-silicon compound. The vapours may be diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen, and may ascend a baffled tube p or pass through a revolving drum in counter-current to the solid. Specified organo-silicon compounds are methylsilicontrichloride, dimethyldichlorosilane, ethyl silicon halides, phenyl silicon halides, phenylmethylsilicon halides, tolyl silicon halides, chlorine, bromine, iodine and fluorine compounds being specifically mentioned.
