The invention relates to a device and method for generating and editing three-dimensional images. A visualization device (such as a head mounted display, HMD, heads-up-display, HUD, or an augmented reality display device), Figure 1 200, displays a three-dimension image volume comprising a three-dimensional image, with the position and orientation of an input surface, 102, being visible within the three-dimension image volume. A user input, 104, is then received via the input surface that is indicative of a two-dimensional image provided in the plane of the input surface. First positional data indicative of a relative position and orientation of the input surface in relation to the three-dimensional image volume is then determined. Subsequently the three-dimensional image is modified to include a three-dimensional representation of the two-dimensional image, the three-dimensional representation having a position and orientation within the three-dimensional image volume determined from the first positional data. The invention enables the user to draw and modify the three-dimensional image by inputting a two-dimensional image onto the input surface. The two-dimensional image is then incorporated into the three-dimensional image and the image volume moved (for example by rotation) to enable further details to be added. |
