A rayon cake is prepared for liquid treatment by coiling a normally flat strip 10, Fig. 1, of liquid-permeable material, reinforced at its edges by resilient metallic wires 11 and 12, and inserting it into the core of the cake, the strip being wider than the axial length of the cake whereby the tendency of the wires to resume their original shape causes the upper and lower portions of the strip to be expanded over the top and bottom inside edges of the cake as shown in Fig. 2. After drying and before rewinding, the cake is placed on a plate 14 formed with a circular recess 15 for the reception of the wire 12 and a plug 17, secured to a plate 16 formed with a circular recess 18 for the reception of the wire 11, is inserted into the cake. The recesses prevent further expansion of the wires during the later stages of unwinding and distortion of the inner convolutions of the cake. One or other recess may be omitted. |
