A medical image formation device (100) comprises: laser emitting elements (1)-(7) which emit laser light of different wavelengths; an image selection unit (9) for selecting the type of an observation image; a light source control unit (8) which controls lighting of the laser emitting elements (1)-(7) according to an observation mode corresponding to the combination of the selected observation images; an imaging unit (18) which images return light of the laser light from a subject to be observed; and an image signal processing circuit (24) which forms the observation image from an image signal from the imaging unit (18). The light source control unit (8) turns on at least one of the laser emitting elements (1)-(7) when a first observation image is selected, and turns on at least one of the laser emitting elements to be turned on in the case of the first observation image when a second observation image is selected.
