<p>A method of using a rotary kiln for waste disposal comprises feeding the waste into a rotary kiln, applying heat to the kiln sufficient to vaporise the waste, and allowing the vapour from the waste to be discharged safely into the surround air. Ideally, the kiln is heated to at least 800°C. The waste may be halite, rock salt or drill cuttings. The kiln may operate under a partial vacuum. Prior to being introduced into the kiln, the waste may pass through a grinding device. The contents of the kiln may be agitated. The kiln may be connected to flues for discharging the vapour and an integral distillation system to recover hydrocarbons. A method of producing a fuel by treating shale and coal in a rotary kiln is also disclosed.</p> |
