A data center comprising: a server; an external power source coupled to the server; a battery; and a battery charger coupled to the battery and the external power source, the battery charger being configured to charge the battery; wherein the server is configured to: monitor a voltage output by the battery using one or more voltage sensors; detect, based on the voltage, that the server is running on battery power; and in response to detecting that the battery charger is no longer re-charging the battery while the server is drawing power from the battery, transition from a first state to a second state in which the server consumes a reduced amount of power while still continuing to operate.
