An embodiment of the present invention relates to a storage device and a method for operating the same. The storage device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: an nonvolatile memory device storing multiple reference data; a memory storing a hash management table which manages multiple reference hash keys for each of the multiple reference data stored in the nonvolatile memory device; a hash key generator generating multiple hash keys based on write-requested data; and a memory controller comparing the multiple hash keys with the reference hash keys for each of the multiple reference data to determine whether or not to store the write-requested data in the nonvolatile memory device in response to the comparison results, wherein the memory controller selects one of the multiple reference data based on similarity between the multiple hash keys and the multiple reference hash keys for each of the multiple reference data and cross-refers the selected reference data to the write-requested data to store the selected reference data in the nonvolatile memory device.
