PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of an optical transmission system.SOLUTION: An optical transmission system 1 comprises: N optical amplifiers 13 and M optical amplifiers 14 for amplifying an optical signal distributed by an optical branch unit 12 and outputting the amplified signal; N optical branch units 53 to which optical signals output from the optical amplifiers 13 are input, respectively; an optical switch unit 51 for selectively outputting each of optical signals output from the optical amplifiers 14 to any of the optical branch units 53; and a monitoring control unit 55 for monitoring operation states of the optical amplifiers 13. The optical switch unit 51 comprises M optical switches 41 for selectively outputting optical signals output from the corresponding optical amplifiers 14 to any of the optical branch units 53. The monitoring control unit 55, when having detected a failure of an optical amplifier 13, makes the failed optical amplifier 13 stop its optical output and controls the optical switch unit 51 so that any of the optical signals output from the optical amplifiers 14 is output to an optical branch unit 53 corresponding to the failed optical amplifier 13.
