The present invention relates to a technology used in an encoding device of HEVC, which is a next-generation video codec, and more specifically, to a transformation-depth-based discrete cosine transform (DCT) size determining device determining the DCT size according to various DCT transformation depths to speed up an encoder, and a method thereof. According to the present invention, the transformation-depth-based DCT size determining device includes: an estimation mode determining unit which determines an estimation mode to determine the DCT size in the root location of a coding unit (CU) present in a coding tree unit (CTU); a transformation unit generation unit which divides the CU into transform units (TUs) based on a residual quad-tree (RQT); and a DCT transformation unit conducting a DCT transformation process based on the TUs. |
