The present invention relates to an apparatus for detecting cable twist and a method thereof which can detect cable twist and the position of cable twist of a cable in real-time during installation of the cable. The apparatus includes: an electronic tag detection part for detecting the position of the cable installed on a cable tray where the cable is installed; a rotation angle detection part for detecting a rotation angle of a cable drum where the cable is wound; and a control part which judges cable twist by comparing the cable installation length according to the position of the cable detected by the electronic tag detection part with the length of the cable released according to the rotation angle detected by the rotation angle detection part.
